Décembre-December

December

The tenth month of the Roman year that began in March.

The nights are deep and very cold
The light of day has lost its hold
As darkness rules beneath the stars
This solstice month will become ours

Octobre

Octobre

October
The eighth month of the Roman year that began in March.
Samhain
There were many Celtic traditions to mark the end of the year (October 31) when the veil between our world and the world of the dead, the spirits and the fairies is very thin and easily traversed.
The Celts, the Gauls and other ancient Western European tribes donned skins and furs. They hoped that the spirits would confuse them with other spirits and leave them alone.
The Celts also left offerings of food at their doors to garner favours from the spirits and to discourage them from entering their homes or doing damage to the crops.

Juin

Juin Junon/Hera

June Juno/Hera
There are three possible origins for the name of the month.
1) Most probable: The month is dedicated to Lucius Junius Brutus. A legendary figure credited with having removed Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the last tyrant-king of Rome, and installing the republic (509 BCE).
2) Juno: Italic goddess and protector of women, fecundity and marriage, associated with Hera (Greek: Lady). Sister and wife of Jupiter (Zeus). Animal symbols include the cow and the peacock.
3) Possibly derived from “junior” (young, young man), the month being dedicated to young men while May is dedicated to seniors.

Mai

Mai

May
The origin of the name is uncertain.
1) Maia: Daughter of Atlas and mother of Hermes (with Zeus). She was placed in the sky with her sisters (the Pleiades) by Zeus to save her from the lovestruck hunter, Orion.
The Pleiades (a star cluster in Taurus)appear in May and announces summer.
2) Maia: Daughter of Pan (Faunus), associated with Hephaestus and Hesta (Vesta) as a household goddess.
Also known as the “bona dea” (good goddess) of growth and increase.

Mars

Mars

March
In ancient Rome Martius was the first month of the year. It is the beginning of spring, the growing season, and the ground is now dry enough for armies to march to war.
Mars is most likely the latinised version of Maris, an Etruscan god of agriculture. Before becoming the Roman god of war, Mars was venerated as the god of fertility and vegetation. He was also the protector of cattle, fields and boundaries.
